The Rejuvenating Yellow/Rose Day!

There are so many holidays that celebrates about love in Korea, there is Valentines Day, White Day, and even celebration for being lonely the Black day but this day that I’m about to talk about is the day for those still hoping to fall in love and celebration for those who are in a relationship and that day is the Yellow Day / Rose Day. 😉

It is called the Yellow Day / Rose Day because in this day, couples dress in yellow and give each other roses. But as I said earlier, this day is not just for those who are in a relationship but also to those who are hoping to be in one and those people who are hoping to find “the one”. Those people that are hoping should eat yellow curry so that it will add spice in their love life.

A Day for Our Beloved Parents

My last blog was about the Children’s Day which is celebrated during May 5 and now it’s the parents turn to be celebrated. Here in the Philippines, we are accustomed to celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is separate dates but in Korea they have Parent’s Day which is celebrated on May 8th.

The most popular gift that is being sold in almost all store in Korea during Parent’s Day is Carnations. Carnation symbolizes Parents’ Day and are given to parents by children in celebrating Parents’ Day.

Celebration like this is one of my favorite. I love my parents that is why I want to show them how much I love and appreciate them. I want them to know that I treasure them and even though it’s not Parent’s Day I want them to feel like it because that is how much I cherish them.

South Korean’s Children’s Day

The Korean’s allot a day to celebrate all kinds of love, February 14 for Valentine’s Day, March 14 for White Day, April 14 for Black Day, and now May 5 for Children’s Day.

Children’s Day is the day where the parents give their children some spoiling. They dress up their kids, take them to the parks especially amusement parks, zoo, cinemas, and they join a variety of celebratory and fun events for children across the country. It was founded by the Korean children’s writer Pang Chong-hwan in 1923 as a way to instill in the children a sense of independence and national pride.

There so many activities that the kids can join in Children’s Day, there are traditional games like yut.  Most often is that gifts are given to the children from the stores where they visited.  There is also a Taek won do demonstration because this self defense originated in Korea more than two thousand years ago.

Black Day is not so bad of a day

The feeling of being lonely is one of the most awful things that you can experience. Almost nobody want to be lonely and be felt undesirable especially during the holiday like the Valentine’s Day. But in South Korea, they allotted a day for those who are feeling lonely and that day is Black Day.

Black Day is a holiday for the people who were not able to receive gifts on Valentine’s Day and White Day. Valentine’s Day is where the female give gifts or chocolates to the male and White Day is the day where the male returns the favour by giving gifts or chocolates but in Black Day, those people who didn’t receive any gifts on both Valentine’s Day and White Day they gather and dress in black, paint their nails black, wear black accessories, and eat jajangmyeon (jjajang transtaltes to black bean paste sauce and myeon to noodles).

This is jajangmyeon that is eaten during the Black Day. This really suits the Black Day not only because of its black paste but also it sometimes leave a black tint on the teeth which is another accessory.

Black Day for me is a very good celebration not because of the message that it sends to the people that didn’t receive any gifts but the way they celebrate it. Lonely people celebrate with other lonely people each and every year and this allow them to socialize with each other. It is like an ironic day in which they celebrate about being lonely but at the same time they are not lonely because of the companionship of other who are celebrating it too. Black day for me is a reminder that even though you did not receive any gifts, you are not alone in this world; it gives a silver lining to the people who are still hoping to meet their one and only and to the people who don’t want to be lonely anymore.
